The Southwest Airlines’ Operations Engineering Intern may be asked to support a variety of projects within the Network Planning Department:
Operations Engineering Team: The Operations Engineering Team evaluates the performance of Southwest's aircraft fleet relative to network routes and operational needs, helping ensure our aircraft can safely and efficiently serve the cities we fly. The Team provides daily operational support and develops tools that optimize key aircraft performance factors, including weight and balance, runway and airport conditions, fuel usage, and aircraft communications, while ensuring compliance with FAA regulations. Their work spans the entire aircraft lifecycle, beginning with aircraft model evaluation, selection, and implementation before acquisition, taking into account Southwest's network strategy and operational requirements. The Team also supports fleet redesign efforts, day-of-operation decisions, and ongoing performance optimization throughout the life of an aircraft. Interns will gain exposure to the intersection of engineering, operations, fleet strategy, and technology while contributing to initiatives that help shape how Southwest's aircraft perform across our network.
