Trans-Canada Capital (TCC) is an asset management firm specializing in innovative investment strategies for institutional investors. Since 2009, the team has successfully managed the pension assets of Air Canada, one of the largest corporate pension plans in the country. Over the years, we have earned an enviable reputation by generating superior returns through strategies focusing on alpha generation in a rigorous risk-controlled framework. With C$30 billion in assets under management (inclusive of leverage), more than 100 investment professionals based in Montreal and Toronto, and a complete range of alternative solutions, TCC is well positioned to meet the needs of institutional investors seeking steady returns.

Few roles at this level offer exposure across both public and private markets. This generalist position covers private market funds, hedge funds, public equities, and co-investments, providing the Associate with exposure to a wide range of investment strategies, manager types, and asset classes. TCC operates with a lean, entrepreneurial team structure, giving the Associate real ownership and work directly alongside senior investment professionals.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Equity and Alternative Investments, the Associate will contribute across TCC's externally managed portfolios, supporting the team on private market funds, hedge fund strategies, public equity strategies, and selective co-investments. The role is generalist, combining rigorous quantitative and qualitative analysis with active relationship management. The successful candidate will be expected to manage their workload with autonomy, exercise sound judgment, and bring the discipline and initiative to drive work forward.

Responsibilities

  • Support due diligence on external funds and co-investments, covering investment processes, risk frameworks and terms, including:
    • track record analysis (attribution, risk-adjusted metrics, factor and style exposure) and judgment of statistical reliability given sample length, return frequency, valuation lag and peer-universe construction;
    • private market cash flow modeling and quantitative peer mapping;
    • single-asset co-investment underwriting, including pressure-testing the sponsor's financial model.
  • Conduct market research and monitor macroeconomic and sector developments, contributing thematic investment ideas across asset classes.
  • Contribute to the preparation of investment memos, research notes, and presentation materials to support portfolio decisions and External Management Investment Committee (EMIC) discussions.
  • Contribute to the preparation of investment memos, research notes and presentation materials, and participate in EMIC meetings covering market developments, idea generation, and the review of fund and co-investment opportunities.
  • Engage with external managers, consultants, and institutional peers to support relationship management and market intelligence.
  • Leverage AI-assisted tools to strengthen due diligence data analysis, streamline workflows, and improve the synthesis of investment insights.
  • Support the integration of sustainable investing practices into manager due diligence and ongoing monitoring, contributing to TCC's responsible investment initiatives.

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in finance, accounting, commerce, economics, mathematics, engineering, or a related field.
  • 1 to 4 years of experience in the financial industry, preferably in asset management, investment banking, sell side research, pension fund management, or investment consulting.
  • Progress toward a CFA or CAIA designation is expected; preference will be given to candidates who have completed at least one level.
  • Exposure to public equity and alternative investments, ideally within an institutional environment, is considered a strong asset.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong quantitative skills with the ability to work across large datasets to produce clear, insight-driven portfolio reports.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Power BI or equivalent visualization tools).
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg terminal is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience applying generative AI tools (such as large language model assistants, AI-powered research platforms, or automated workflows) to enhance analytical productivity, synthesize complex information, and accelerate investment research and reporting.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities under pressure.

Competencies

  • Rigorous, disciplined, and highly organized, with strong attention to detail.
  • Sharp analytical thinker who can distill complex information into clear conclusions.
  • Proactive and intellectually curious; stays attuned to markets and brings ideas to the team.

  • Pro-active with strong sense of initiative and autonomy.
  • Communicates with clarity and confidence, including under pressure.
